It’s Time For Us To Be Our Own Heroes

I spent the first 25 years of my life learning to navigate the world and the people in it. My drive and direction came from a desire to be part of a community I looked up to, a place where surfers, skateboarders, artists, musicians and other creative entrepreneurs called the shots.

I did whatever it took to work my way into these circles and find the mentors and champions who would help me build my own story. As I became more established, people began to come to me for help and I was happy to oblige.

What I didn’t understand at that time was that when we stop learning we stop growing. The more I answered questions for other people the less I asked for help myself. I had proven myself right and capable so many times I believed I either knew what I needed to know or I would figure it out on my own. The more successful I got the more isolated I became and ‘on my own’ became my reality.

For the last 25 years I have been working my way back. At first it was mostly previous lessons repeated only this time I saw myself making the choices that isolated me, bearing witness if you will, which is what I needed to take responsibility for it.

Slowly I began to seek new mentors and to ask for help again and, sure enough, my world shifted from variations on the past to new experiences that stretched and pulled. I began to grow again.

I started my 50th year with a commitment to grow with like-minded people. My mission is to help responsible leaders do their best work in the world. To break free of our old stories and create new ones that serve us better. To stop our isolating behaviour and open ourselves to more joy and fulfillment and to clearly articulate this process so we have a sense of understanding and control.

If this appeals and applies to you please join me. It’s time for us to be our own heroes.
